What is Safe Mosquito Control?
Mosquito control can be hazardous or it can be safe. What is safe mosquito control?
The definition of safe is "protected from or not exposed to danger or risk; not likely to be harmed". So a safe mosquito control would be one that is effective in controlling mosquitoes but does not harm humans, animals or the environment or expose them to any dangers or risks.
There are many products for mosquito control available on the market. They range from mass-produced products from Big Chemical companies down to Mom and Pop solutions made in a garage. Ingredients vary as well. The typical synthetic ingredients which are NOT found in Nature but created in chemical laboratories range from up to 100% DEET and can include Permethrin and Picaridin as well.
Natural ingredients include Citronella, Oil of Eucalyptus, Lemon Grass and Cedar. Obviously, ingredients made from Nature herself and preferable over harsh chemical ingredients.
Here is where safe mosquito control gets sticky... The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the use of DEET for mosquitoes. Uh, what?
DEET is not even remotely safe - even when used exactly as the directions state. The laundry list of harms caused by DEET include eye irritation, pain and watering; skin irritation, redness, rash and swelling; stomach upset, nausea and vomiting; seizures; and can cause vomiting, shaking, excitement, lack of coordination and seizures if used on pets.
Warnings from the EPA and American Academy of Pediatrics state the following: Do not apply over cuts, wounds or irritated skin, do not apply on infants, do not use under clothing and wash treated clothing before wearing it again, avoid over-application of DEET products, after use, wash treated skin with soap and water.
And the other synthetic chemicals - Picaridin and Permethrin? Very similar warnings because these chemicals are very similar - they are neuro-toxins meaning they affect the nervous systems (brains) of pests. All are known toxins, poisons and carcinogens... so how can they be 'safe' mosquito control?
Let's get back to Nature's ingredients and pick the best option. Citronella, Eucalyptus and Lemon Grass are all mosquito repellents. That means that mosquitoes don't like them. Kind of like some people don't like Brussel Sprouts - but it won't kill you to eat them!
The game changer here is Cedar. Cedar Oil is generated by Nature herself and cedar has been used for centuries to control mosquitoes and other pests. Cedar chests and closets? They control moths, ants and roaches from getting into stored clothing and linens. Cedar shavings in animal pens controls fleas, flies and other pests from bothering animals. To bugs, Cedar is deadly but to humans, animals and the environment, it is simply a pleasant aroma.
