What is a No-See-Em?

A No-see-em is a biting bug you cannot really see, but you definitely feel the bites from razor sharp pinchers.  If you’ve ever had an interaction with these painful, annoying pests, you won’t forget it!

Billions of No-see-ems swarm as you disturb their nests.  They get in your hair, in your ears, and all over your skin before you know it.  They are tiny and look almost like floating dust particles... until you get that first bite and you start to notice immediately!

No-see-ems are in the Ceratopogonidae family with more than 4000 different species.  They are also called Biting Midges, Sand Gnats, or what locals in South Carolina call ‘Flying Teeth’. 

Just like mosquitoes, only the females bite.  But boy, do they ever bite! You don’t really see anything and then you feel a pinch.  Then another one.  It’s those nasty almost invisible bugs sucking your blood. You’re outdoors for mere minutes and before you know it, you’re covered in bites that are going to itch and fester and bother you for days!

No-see-ems nest in moist, sandy soil.  Irrigated turf is the perfect spot.  Anyone who plays soccer, football, or golf can tell you all about No-see-ems! 

But that’s not all - the edges of the salt marsh, in the pluff mud, along lagoon edges, in drainage ditches and all areas that collect rainwater are putting out the welcome mat for female No-see-ems to lay their eggs.
