Mosquitoes infected with Dengue Fever transform to Mutant Disease Spreaders. According to researchers at none other than Johns Hopkins (off the charts street cred here), when mosquitoes are infected with Dengue Fever, their sense of smell heightens to make them a stealthier, more adept predator. On top of that, it makes them hungrier so they find victims easily with a vengeance.
This is not your ordinary mosquito. Sounds more like Science Fiction if a disease has the ability to mutate the basic senses (sense of smell and hunger) of an infected host creature to be better skilled at spreading that disease.
Should we be afraid?
Well, Dengue Fever doesn’t quite have the same familiar ring to it that West Nile Virus does when it comes to associating mosquitoes to disease. Is this something we can conveniently ignore? Nope, sorry!
Dengue infests as many as 100 million people every year and is the number one cause of mosquito related deaths. Yep – even more than Malaria which we’ve all heard about. West Nile Virus is hardly a blip on the radar in comparison. Granted, Dengue Fever hangs out mostly in the tropics but guess what? We had a really warm, mild winter and these blood sucking mutants are slowly creeping up beyond their latitudinal benchmarks.
I don’t recall hearing anything about West Nile Virus when I was a child. Well, no kidding since it wasn’t even a remote possibility in the safety of the United States. It was reserved for the poor, hot, nether regions of the tropics. And what is it they say about history repeating itself?
The likelihood of Dengue Fever moving up into the United Sates is as likely as the steady march of Fire Ants only faster since these babies fly. And the nature of the beast is to be a skilled hunter desperately in search of human prey.
When it comes to treatment, according to the CDC, the preferred method of treatment for Dengue Fever is to prevent getting bitten by mosquitoes. You can’t vaccinate against it and you can only alleviate symptoms and hope they don’t get too bad. This is like a box score of Dengue Fever 100, Human Race 0.
So how do you prevent mosquito bites? The regular suggestions of eliminating standing water, avoid outdoors at dawn and dusk, wear light-colored clothing, blah, blah, blah. One common misinformation making the rounds is to use DEET but that is insane! Using DEET is like intentionally drinking poison – it is a strong neuro-toxin the human body absorbs at alarming rates and is well documented to cause a host of health issues. Telling people to use DEET is REALLY bad advice!
